Lombok means chili in Javanese.
The many chili plantations seen
across Lombok have become a direct
representation of the origin of the
island’s name, Lombok.
However, folklore revealed that
Lombok originated from the word
“Lomboq” in Sasak’s language which
means “straight”. This was a direct
representation to their lengthy
straight-nightly journey from Java to
the eastern side of Indonesia. As time
passed, the adopted word “Lomboq”
became “Lombok”.
