Eruption of Mount Merapi
128 Borobudur, is one of the world’s largest Buddhist 129
temples. There are three tiers to its building
structure: A conical base with five concentric
square terraces, three circular platforms on the
trunk of the cone and a monumental stupa. The
walls and handrails are designed with fine low
reliefs and cover a surface area of 2,500sqm.
The 72 circular platforms each have a Buddha
statue in it. The temple has gone through
restoration projects held by the government and
UNESCO since the 1970s. Besides the Borobudur
temple, there are 2 other smaller temples,
Mendut Temple and Pawon Temple located at
the east. The whole structure combines the
uniqueness of the ancestor worship ideas in
relations to the idea of a terraced mountain, and
the Buddhist concept of obtaining Nirvana.
